The Problem

Today's networks are a fragmented mess

A typical deployment requires switches, wireless controllers, access points, SD-WAN, firewall, NAC, RADIUS servers, NAT, DHCP, and management — all from different vendors.

Today's enterprise and service provider networks are composed of many disjointed pieces, often purchased from different vendors. The minimum requirements for a typical deployment might include switches, wireless controllers, access points, SD-WAN, firewall, NAC, RADIUS servers, NAT, DHCP servers, and management. Those networks are difficult to configure and difficult to scale.

When you add vertical-specific requirements — PMS integration, captive portals, content filtering, location services, billing systems, HTML payload rewriting, CALEA compliance — the complexity compounds further. MSOs and service providers face an even harder challenge: virtualized appliances chained together, containers, piles of VMs, cloud services, and a cloud manager all layered on top. Over 30 distinct features may be required to run a single network.

Simple operational questions become unanswerable: What is this MAC address experiencing? What policies are applied to it? How much utilization is incurred by this PMS guest? And simple configuration tasks — like sending a specific booth's traffic to a specific uplink — become engineering projects. RUCKUS WAN Gateway was built to eliminate this complexity entirely.

Architecture

Everything Integrated. One Platform.

RWG integrates all required network services tightly in one place — eliminating the need for dedicated RADIUS servers, captive portal servers, routers, firewalls, NAC software, L7 filtering, or SD-WAN devices for your branch office or property. Everything talks to everything.

SmartZone controllers and ICX switches can be adopted by RWG, greatly increasing deployment speed for large and complex networks. RWG keeps their configurations in sync with its internal repository, makes configuration changes via REST API (SmartZone) and SSH (ICX), and can generate a full topology map using LLDP. A northbound REST API supports configuration and monitoring from external systems.

Features & Capabilities

Core Platform Features
01

Device Adoption & Topology Mapping

RWG adopts ICX switches and SmartZone controllers, keeping their configurations in sync with its internal repository. Configuration changes are pushed via REST API to SmartZone and SSH to ICX. LLDP is used to automatically build and maintain a full network topology map — removing the need for manual documentation.

02

Microsegmentation

L2/L3 microsegmentation configurable per unit (each device gets its own VLAN and IP subnet), per room (shared VLAN for all devices in a room, defined by DPSK with guest name and room number), or per account (shared VLAN for all devices on the same account, used for exhibition halls). Hundreds of VLANs and IP subnets can be provisioned in one click.

03

RADIUS, NAC & Authentication

RWG acts as the integrated NAC and RADIUS server. WLANs configured for microsegmentation use 802.1X, PSK, or DPSK encryption — eliminating "insecure network" warnings. After authentication, clients are assigned directly to their VLAN and IP subnet as defined by RADIUS policies. Splash portals are optional and only required when credential entry is needed.

04

PMS Integration

Integrates with Property Management System guest databases of major hotel chains including Marriott, Hilton, and Clarion. Supports the MICROS FIAS specification and includes a simulated guest database for testing. Uses DPSK mangling — any valid DPSK (e.g. 328smith, Smith328) routes the wireless client to its dedicated VLAN and IP subnet. Pre-generates DPSKs for guests in the PMS database automatically.

05

Location-Aware Services

Supports location services by proximity to access points for connected wireless clients, without requiring additional software. RUCKUS SPoT integration is also available. Guests can be instantly located by last name, room number, IP, or MAC address. Location data can be used for real-time network changes, crowding event notifications, wayfinding portals, and SMS marketing campaigns based on physical location.

06

Integrated SD-WAN & Uplink Control

Supports site-to-site and host-to-site VPNs using IPsec, link load balancing, and link selection with application affinity. For trade shows and exhibition environments, RWG can present a portal allowing booth owners to select their preferred ISP uplink. Different uplinks are automatically selected based on application traffic type — ensuring optimal routing without manual intervention.

07

Pack Manager — Multi-Instance Management

Pack Manager provides a centralised console to manage and monitor multiple RWG instances from a single location. Administrators can monitor instance health, push configuration changes to multiple remote devices simultaneously, and perform RWG software upgrades across the fleet. Designed to support large-scale distributed deployments where many RWG instances operate across different sites.

08

Marketing Campaigns & Analytics

RWG supports policy-driven marketing campaigns — for example, prompting guests to register their mobile number on first connection, then sending SMS messages based on location or other criteria. HTML payload rewriting enables advertising insertion. Long-term subscriber analytics storage allows property owners to build detailed ad profiles and usage reports over time.

09

Captive Portal & Billing Integration

Built-in captive portal with forced browser redirect, interstitial redirection, and content filtering. Integrates with popular billing systems and CC payment gateways. For exhibition halls and trade shows, an integrated web portal allows exhibitors to purchase preferred ISP link access directly. Supports subscriber self-service provisioning and simplified network management portals for non-technical property staff.

Summary of Benefits

Why RUCKUS WAN Gateway

01

Everything in One Platform

No need for separate RADIUS servers, captive portal servers, routers, firewalls, NAC software, L7 filtering, or SD-WAN devices. RWG integrates all 30+ required services tightly — everything talks to everything.

02

Unmatched Scalability

Deploy on $400 commodity hardware for small networks, or scale to redundant server clusters handling 100,000+ subscribers. The same platform, the same management interface, at any scale.

03

Automatic Microsegmentation

Hundreds of VLANs and IP subnets provisioned in one click. VLAN interfaces configured automatically in RWG and the ICX switch. DHCP scopes created automatically. No manual per-VLAN configuration required.

04

Deep PMS Integration

DPSK mangling makes hotel guest authentication seamless — guests connect using a combination of their room number and last name. DPSKs are pre-generated automatically from the PMS guest database.

05

Location & Marketing Intelligence

Real-time guest location by name, room, IP, or MAC. Geospatial pattern analysis. SMS and notification campaigns triggered by location events — all built in, no third-party software required.

06

Fast Deployment via Device Adoption

RWG adopts existing SmartZone controllers and ICX switches, keeping configurations in sync automatically. Topology maps generated via LLDP. Dramatically reduces deployment time for large, complex networks.

07

Strong REST API

Northbound REST API provides full configuration and monitoring access for OSS/BSS integration, automation workflows, and third-party management systems. Purpose-built for service provider environments.

08

Operator-Friendly Management

Property staff can locate guests on a map, check which APs are down, push a button to reconfigure the network for a conference, and collect subscriber data — without requiring engineering support for each task.
